The Pušelė Nursery/Kindergarten of Šilutė was established on March 15, 1977. It was restructured into a kindergarten/primary school in 1993. On July 1, 2004, it acquired its former status as a nursery/kindergarten.

At the moment there are 7 groups: 2 preparatory classes, 4 kindergarten (including one Waldorf education group) and 1 nursery groups with 135 children. The staff includes 15 teachers and 23 service staff employees.

We have chosen an ethnic cultural approach to education. Ethnic culture is the integrating axis of the educational process. The activities of the nursery/kindergarten are organised according to the rhythm of the Lithuanian folk calendar. We decorate the interior and exterior of the building according to the principles of Lithuanian folk art.

The institution has nine computerised workplaces with the Internet access in the rooms for a head teacher, deputy head teacher, an assistant for economy, accountant, secretary, general practice nurse and teaching staff.

From 1994 to 2000, we participated in the activities of the Project for Democratisation of the Pre-School Education System (Egmont Project) sponsored by the Open Society Fund Lithuania and the Egmont Foundation Denmark, the aim of this international project being to promote the implementation and development of the reform for pre-school education system in Lithuania.

The teachers of the educational institution actively participated in the process of preparing such important national documents for changing pre-school education as:

  • Competition on the Project for Preparing the Internal Audit Methodology in Pre-School Educational Institutions, Ministry of Education and Science, 2004;
  • The Pre-School Education Programme Modelling Project, Ministry of Education and Science, National Teacher Development Centre, 2005, 2006.

The teachers systematically improve their qualification through the European Commission’s Lifelong Learning Programme, the Comenius Programme (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009).

The following continuous projects are being implemented receiving funding through the way of competition from the municipality:

  • The Project ‘Led by the Sun’ according to the Public Health Support Programme of the Šilutė District Municipality (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009);
  • The Project ‘I Will Defend My Country, Mother and Myself’ within the framework of the projects for Civic and National Education (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009).

The children supervised by their teachers continuously take part in numerous municipal, regional, national and international exhibitions, competitions and actions (drawing, sport, folklore, etc.).
